Orrell & Winstanley Community Sports Club - our Joint Venture with Winstanley Park Cricket Club 8 of 18

8. Meet The Team Helping You Deliver The Orrell & Winstanley Community Sports Club Project

Mike Shore
President Orrell & Winstanley Community Sports Club

I am proud of a lifetime’s involvement and commitment to local amateur sport and am a member of both founding clubs.

I was brought up at 102 Winstanley Road Orrell, opposite the YMCA ground where ORUFC played their games after the war and in the early 1950s (the age giveaway). My dad was Chairman at ORUFC for 19 years, 1939/40 and 1945 to 1962 so I have been a supporter since 5 years old, - or at whatever age I was first perched on the touchline out of the pram!

I’ve carried on that tradition and can still be found at all home games for 1st XV or 2nd XV’s (if in the country). - my actual rugby playing career being very limited to a very few games on the famous Meadow at Edge Hall Rd but you never forget experiences like that!

My affiliation with Winstanley Park CC has been since around the age of 18, with roles as Chairman for 6 years and Secretary for 19 years with a playing career from 18 to 62yrs old - peaking in 1979 by winning the 1st X1 batting averages!

I’m still involved on the cricket section Committee, as Assistant Secretary, plus helping the Groundsman Bill and preparing the junior team pitches as my legacy to ensuring a solid future foundation for the cricket section.

My educational background has been via Up Holland Grammar School, Leeds University Mechanical Engineering Dept, followed by a career in the railway industry latterly as part of the bid management team at Alstom, Preston.

I have been O&WCSC President for the last 18 months and I also serve as one of the Trustees of the club. I see the Presidents role in these formative years as bringing my extensive sporting and commercial knowledge to help the Chairman and Board team face the multiple challenges such a major project brings, - you have good people here with varied multiple skills who give a massive amount of their personal time and effort on all our behalves.

The cricket club was founded in 1878 and rugby in 1927 so both have a long proud history that is our collective duty to continue and uphold. So please join with me in a joint ‘team’ effort going forward to ensure this fabulous project reaches a successful conclusion, - I ask all members to give the Board your full support whenever it’s requested.

Tony Havlin
Chair, Orrell & Winstanley Community Sports Club | Chair Orrell RUFC

I have a keen interest in most sports and believe that team sports in particular can help prepare youngsters for life. In my case I chose rugby I have been an Orrell member for over 50 years and chairman of the club for the past 13 years.

I am old enough to remember when Orrell RUFC was at the centre of the local community and recognise the contribution that previous generations have made to their rich history. I have been working with WPCC for the past 4 years to establish the O&WCSC. I see this as a venture to establish a sports facility at the heart of our community that can benefit all and at the same time secure the futures of two great clubs.
