ORRELL 43 NEW BRIGHTON 0
Orrell moved up to third in the Lancs/Cheshire Division Two competition after a seven-try, 43-0 defeat of New Brighton.

With rain affecting the handling of both sides, it took Orrell some time to settle but when they put it together, it was joyous to watch.

50-year old prop Mark Williams opened the scoring with a lovely dummy and charge after 17 minutes with Craig Thomas hitting the first of four goals.

Despite dominating possession, Orrell had to wait until the 32nd minute to put their second try on the board. South African number eight Wilbur Smith picked up from the base of a scrum an charged towards the line. Although he was felled, Smith laid the ball back and scrum-half Adam Worley nipped over for another Thomas improved score.

The try-scoring combination was reversed a couple of minutes later as Worley played a penalty with his boot and accelerated past three defenders, running into the 22' before offloading in traffic for Smith to dive over the line. That made it 19-0 which was a fair reflection of the hosts dominance.

Two tries in four minutes at the start of the second half threatened to open the floodgates as a set move saw Matty Johnson race through the middle from thirty metres before Johnson was in again, winning the race to a deft kick from skipper Dan Huxley after he broke through with the pace of an outside back. With Thomas goaling both, Orrell now led 33-0.

Thomas himself saw a try ruled out after 49 minutes from a forward pass and New Brighton toiled hard to prevent any further concession until the 62nd minute. Substitute Chris Wynn almost touched down on the left and after moving back to take a relieving kick, he skipped across the field with the ball being moved through several hands before Thomas got the final offload away for Worley to dot down his second try in the corner. James Ratcliffe took over kicking but the fly-half couldn't convert from wide out.

The visitors enjoyed more possession in the final quarter but were powerless to halt a seventh Orrell try when Kieron Herbert combined to get fellow centre Tom Hallsall swan diving at the corner. There was no goal but that wrapped up Orrell's seventh league victory of the season.
