(A joint venture between ORUFC & WPCC to build our own home & pitches)

The minutes of the AGM of the Orrell & Winstanley Community Sports Club held recently on 4 February are now available to download.

We are pleased to inform you that there will be no change to the adult membership (£30) for this season. The membership categories as approved at the AGM are given in the minutes at Appendix 3.

There’s a lot going on at the Sports Club (and our sporting sections of Orrell RUFC & Winstanley Park Cricket Club) and everyone is working hard to progress the work & the fundraising we need to do, if we are to meet our deadlines once we access the land in October/November this year.

We would be delighted if more people would like to get involved with our Sports Clubs and help us achieve our goal of our own home and pitches. Perhaps you would consider joining our 100/200 Club, renewing your membership with either Orrell RUFC or Winstanley Park Cricket Club or attending one of our fundraising events (see below)

The rugby club is having a great season, with the 1XV being in the top three of the Lancs/Cheshire League 2 (the 2XV are actually top of their league) and our Mini and Juniors continue to grow from strength to strength and show incredible skill; teamwork and love for the game. We even have several our U16s players progressing, not just into Junior Colts next season, but their rugby careers through the Sale Sharks DPP/Academy programme (of which we are very proud). Training takes place every Wednesday at St John Rigby College and new players (supporters and mums and dads too) are always welcome.

Our Touch Section (Orrell Anvils) are also doing incredibly well; with over 30+ mixed age and gender training every Friday at St John Rigby College. The team also boasts 7 juniors and 3 adults in England Touch training camps (again of which we are incredibly proud). Training takes place each Friday and everyone, irrespective of age or ability, is welcome to come along.

You may have also seen the media coverage we are receiving currently? Granada TV did an excellent feature on the Club at the end of January; we continue to receive good press via the Wigan Evening Post and we’re front page news in the Rugby Paper this week (www.therugbypaper.co.uk) … not to mention that BT Sport filmed their Rugby Tonight programme from Orrell RUFC (okay Winstanley Park Cricket Club and Winstanley Tennis Club) last Monday. Don’t worry if you missed any of these great media moments, we will be sending out clips and links to the programmes in the next week or so with our next Newsletter.

So, thank you for your continued support. We will keep you informed of how we are doing but if you do have any questions or queries, then please get in touch. We’d love to hear from you. You can contact us via email (enquiries@orrellrugbyunion.com); Facebook and Twitter or you can write to us at: 57 Milton Grove, Orrell, WN5 8HP.

This is the list of our events we have planned this year:

Race Night
Our Mini and Junior Section will be hosting a Race Night at Winstanley Tennis Club on 1 March 2019. There is no charge for entry and everyone (children included) welcome to attend. It’s your chance to own that race horse you always wanted!

Sports Dinner
Our Sports Dinner this year will be held on 23 March 2019 at Holland Hall, with Simon Shaw and Peter Scrivener the guest speakers. Peter Emmett will, once again, be our host & our comedian for [/b]the evening. Simon Shaw - a name that is renowned across the rugby world as he towers over most mere mortals at 6’8. Simon has represented England at various levels including students and Under-21s. Simon was selected as a member of the England 2007 Rugby World Cup squad and played the full 80 minutes in the 2007 Rugby World Cup Final. In a 12-year career, Peter Scrivener played over 120 games for Wasps and represented the England A and Sevens teams.

Ticket price is £47.50. The price for a full table is offered at £45/head. The ticket price includes a three-course meal and a complimentary bottle of red and white wine per table.
There will be some excellent items for auction during the evening plus an assortment of raffle prizes. To book a table or reserve a ticket please contact Dave Hewlett or Tracy Monckton via email to enquiries@orrellrugbyunion.com

Our last home game of the season will be on 6 April 2019 vs Aspull RUFC (we’re at home that day at St John Rigby) and we aim to make this a day to remember. They’ll be a curtain raiser from the U10s, Touch demonstrations; cricket nets and lots more. There will be a bbq and refreshments on site and from the school cafeteria area.

We’ll be hosting our Annual Golf Day this year on 14 June in the beautiful surroundings of Houghwood Golf Club. It will be the usual 4 ball stableford and you can register your team now via email to enquiries@orrellrugbyunion.com. Teams of 4 and entry fee includes, bacon bap on arrival & 3 course dinner.

We’ve a new event for all our Lady Members … The Ascot Ladies Day. Sadly, we won’t be travelling to Ascot just to Houghwood Golf Club, but we will be dressing up in all our finery and hats and enjoy the fun & betting as if we were there in person (The races will be broadcast throughout the room). Further details to follow but if you would like to book your table now, then please email your details to enquiries@orrellrugbyunion.com.

The Beer Festival has moved …. But only down the road to Winstanley Tennis Club. Dates for your diary are 20/21 September 2019. More details to follow.

Finally, the year would not be complete without our October Annual Dinner Dance. We’re still working out the details for this event, but we’ll let you know as soon as we have!
