Orrell RUFC Vets team enjoyed their first ever run out on Saturday vs local rivals Aspull RUFC Vets.

Orrell RUFC Vets team enjoyed their first ever run out today at local rivals Aspull RUFC Vets. With the majority not having played contact rugby for 5 years or so, the squad looked nervous at kick off time.

Aspull loaned a player to Orrell RUFC to even the numbers up - but once the whistle went it looked as if they'd been playing together forever (which I think some had). In the Aspull sunshine Orrell's pack decided to try some keep ball and charged towards their opponents line before releasing the backs who opened their legs and showed their class with centre Adam Glover diving in for his and Orrell's first try. The game was played in great spirit with Aspull giving as good as they got. Only good defence kept Aspull from crossing Orrell’s line and the enthusiastic crowd cheering on both teams encouraged open and running rugby with Orrell's second try coming after 20 minutes scored by David Wane in the far corner.

An injury to Davies meant Orrell went down to 14 men again when the first half finished after 30 minutes. Shortly after the restart Ormesher released his fellow centre Adam Glover for his second try to make the score 15-0. Aspull made some changes and attacked Orrells line again for about 5 minutes but couldn't break through. A good clearance kick by Andy Draper relieved the line and with a ball steal at the line out Steve Ormesher raced through to score himself to close the second Quarter 17-0 in Orrell's favour. From the kick off orrells front row took it on themselves to make ground upfield with the ball finally being released for Glover to get his hat trick to the right of the posts. Another Orrell injury meant Aspull loaned Orrell another player to keep the game even and both teams playing running rugby the crowd were shouting for more .

The players decided to play a third session of 15 minutes with Steve Ormesher running in for his second time and also converting it to make the score line 27-0 to Orrell. Aspull were determined not to give in and gave all the members of their squad game time finally breaking Orrells defence by charging over in the corner to great delight by all the spectators . After a short break they decided there was enough time for a final 15 minute session and so they carried on with a sub finally turning up for Orrell who ran in a final try from a great offload by Glover by John Dickinson . The final score off 32-5 to Orrell didn't show how much Aspull contributed to a great game with all players asking for a replay, and it'll come as soon as we can find a suitable date. So thanks to all the Veteran rugby players you certainly know how to entertain .
