Anselmians 2xv 10 Orrell 24 2xv

Semi Final day and Orrell RUFC 2xv team travel across the water to play Anselmians on the Wirral. As per previous weeks Orrell were able to field a strong squad.

Weather conditions were appalling with on-off rain during the match. Very strong wind almost directly across the pitch slightly right to left made playing rugby difficult.

Orrell started the match left to right in the first half against wind. Early exchanges by both teams and first score went to the home team, a penalty 3-0 after 5’ minutes. Orrell settled down the better of the two teams and after 19’ minutes from good work from the forwards Chris Wynn crosses the try line. Conversion missed and score moved to 3-5 and Orrell would be in front for the rest of the game.

Orrell forged forward and Andy Stott crashed over the try line after 29’ minutes conversion by Ollie Wakefield. Unfortunately a knee injury to Andy forced his departure and was replaced by James Pearson.

With half time approaching next to score was Matt Stafford, his try came when he blocked a clearance kick on Anselmians 22 and Matt picked up the ball to score under posts. Half time whistle and score 3-17.

2nd half underway Anselmians play became a bit ill disciplined and Orrell players Rowe and Wane leaving the game with head injuries, Rowe was able to return but Wane was withdrawn on precautionary physio advice.

Andy Stott returned replacing Dave Wane and James Ratcliffe was introduced to the game for Ollie Wakefield. The difference between Orrell and Anselmians was line speed and aggression in defence. Strong running and defending from Adam Glover, Louis Whitfield & Matt Stott in particular proved to be the difference.

The final try came on 64’ minutes from Louis Whitfield which was converted by James Ratcliffe.

Final whistle and Orrell advance to final.
