Orrell Lions under 16s 42 - Caldy RUFC 26

Building on last week’s performance against Southport the lads went into today's game well prepared and full of confidence. The weather was awful but the Winstanley pitch held up well suiting our brand of rugby.

Tries today scored by;
Tom Lee
Niall Povall x 2
Tom Campbell 3

Again every player is worthy of mention but by exception;

  • Sam Goldthorpe - a great debut at centre. Such a talented lad with fantastic hands and a go forward mentality. Lost a tooth but won over coaches, team mates and spectators. Great game, well done Sam. Dentist Monday!
  • Harry Parkinson - for his defensive performance. Outstanding today Harry. Technically brilliant in the tackle driving back many a Caldy attacker.
  • Connor Smith - a fantastic defensive performance on the wing against a quality opposite number. Owned his space and missed nothing.
  • Tom Lee - played fly- half and wing today. The most creative player on the pitch. All round outstanding performance. Kicked all of his 6 conversions from all over the pitch.
  • Matt Smith - great game in the back row. Carried well and tackled hard. Never puts a foot wrong. Impressive as always.
  • Dan Hopkins - played Lock and Flanker. Defensively brilliant and made countless hard yards with ball in hand.
  • Alex Dixon - his second half performance was outstanding. His best defensive performance of the season.
  • Luke Unsworth - improving every week. Mopped up many a loose ball and recycled to enable his team mates to build pressure.
  • Tom Gornall - great hands and a really creative and intelligent kicking game that turned opposition backs and put the ball into space for his wingers to chase. Great game Tom, well done.

Tom Campbell - wins the prize for most rucks hit today and top grafter. His technical brilliance is sometimes hidden in the breakdown but he secures the ball as first man in and retains possession for his team mates. Ran hard and achieved a well-deserved hat trick! Outstanding Tom.

MAN OF THE MATCH - Niall Povall. Solid under a wet and slippy high ball. His ability to run the ball out of his own 22 is a joy to behold. His step, vision and turn of pace was outstanding today. Worked well in partnership with Tom Lee.

THE FUTURE IS BLACK AND AMBER
Did you know we are crowdfunding to help all our Mini and Junior Teams to have a future playing on their own ground and with their own changing rooms. The new facility, once built, will not only provide facilities for our club and our JV Partners, Winstanley Park Cricket Club but provide a legacy for the local communities too. The facilities will be open to all and completing this work would allow us to expand our offer to children & youth teams, new and different sports as well as other groups and the wider community.
Please help us ensure a future - https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/buildthedream
