Caldy 7s – A Day Out In The Wirral Sunshine

Orrell RUFC were delighted to accept an invitation to play in the 75th Caldy 7s. Saturday 19th May was the day and the coach was ordered. Two teams entered into competition, Orrell 1xv entered into the plate tournament and the touch time entered into the touch tournament.

Orrell RUFC have won the Caldy 7s on many occasions with the last win registered in 1996. The trophy from that competition sadly was lost the club fire so club commissioned a new trophy for event. Here John Huyton club secretary presented the new trophy to Caldy secretary Tom McMahon.

Orrell drawn in the same group as Waterloo, Prenton, Caldy Colts, Wirral Barbs, Altrinham Kersal and You’ve Changed. All group games won and semi final victory placed Orrell in the final against Waterloo. Tough game with both teams trying to take the advantage. Waterloo eventual winners 21-12.

Orrell vs Caldy Colts 24-17 Won
Orrell vs Prenton 41-19 Won


On the touch rugby side, Orrell Anvils took 5 U18s & 8 U16s with girls playing in the mens open age competiton. Three group matches resulted in 2 wins and 1 defeat which was a fantastic result. Unfortuately tries scored resulted in teams elimination from the competition. Saying this the team displayed a magnificent approach to the tournament and performances something to be very proud of. Both Kev Hatersley and Gary Povall commented “we are very proud of the team performance today and the touch section is growing from strength to strength.
