Orrell take the spoils in Local Derby Match vs Wigan
At the beginning of the new season, Orrell and Wigan agreed two friendlies for 2018/19. Having won the 1st game Orrell made the short trip to Douglas Valley to play the 2nd return leg ‘friendly’ in a match that was always going to be keenly contested.
Orrell took the lead on the 10 minutes, as Wigan were caught offside and the penalty was converted by Craig Thomas. Wigan responded virtually immediately with a converted try by Adam Dwyer to give Wigan the 7-3 lead.
Orrell took the game back to Wigan after the try pinning the home team back and Orrell took advantage of Wigan transgressions with two further penalties to take the lead 7-9. Craig Thomas again kicking the penalties.
With the first half drawing to a close, Wigan’s back line passed the ball through hands and Jack Proffitt went over in the corner. Half time minutes away from a high tackle resulted in a tap penalty being taken quickly. Stephen Ormisher took the ball on and put a deft chip through which was collected by the Matty Johnson who went over in the corner to give Orrell a 12-14 lead at half time.
The second half was very similar to the first with both teams exchanging attacking plays. On 60 minutes play was stopped after punching by Wigan’s Toby Harrison resulted in a red card for Wigan back row player.
Wigan continued to attack and Adam Dwyer gave Wigan the lead with 10 minutes to play after a penalty was awarded to the home team. Wigan 15-14.
Orrell immediately regrouped and took advantage of the extra space in the Wigan defensive line. A good break from inside centre Tom Halsall resulted in the final score winning try of the game as he took the ball over for the winning try. Wigan 15-19 Orrell.
A large crowd saw a throughly entertaining game and Orrell RUFC wish to thank Wigan for the hospitality shown to both senior and junior sections.
