Orrell unable to counter Wigans bigger forwards to loss Away by 4 tries to 2 tries
In front of a large crowd of supporters for this local Derby Wigan kick off and immediately Orrell knock on. They eventually get possession of the ball, but give away a penalty, which resulted in Wigan having a throw in at a line-out 5 metres from the try line. Desperate defence by Orrell stopped the Home side scoring. However, Wigan continued to put pressure on Orrell through their bigger forwards, especially at scrums. Just under 10 minutes play, Orrell were reduced to 14 players when Fly Half Keiron Herbert was Yellow Carded. 2 minutes later, Wigan had a scrum 10 metres out and about 10 metres from touch. They won the ball and wrong footed the Orrell defence by moving the ball blind to touch down in the corner. The conversion was missed, but Wigan had a 5 points to nil lead.
Wigan were unable capitalise on their extra player to add more points, but just before Keiron Herbert was due to rejoin the field, Orrells prop Kyle Herbert was Yellow carded and Orrell were down to 13 players for about a minute of the game, but then had to continue with only 14 players. Wigan again could not take advantage of their extra player to add more points.
With just over 10 minutes left in the first half, Orrell were back to full strength. With 5 minutes left to the break, a Wigan Player was Yellow carded and less than 2 minutes later a second Wigan player was Yellow Carded. Craig Thomas kicked the penalty resulting penalty from the Yellow Card to make the score Wigan 5 Orrell 3 at Half Time.
The Second half started with Wigan still having 13 players on the field. Within a few minutes of the restart Orrell are awarded a scrum due to a Wigan knock on. From the scrum Orrell move the ball left across the field and when Orrells winger was tackled they quickly recycled the ball and move it back across the field for James Glover to score. Craig Thomas converted the try to put Orrell in the lead 5 – 10.
With Wigan back to full strength, they had a scrum inside the Orrell Half. They win the ball and after some good handling, touch down between the posts. The try was converted to give Wigan back the lead, by 2 points.
With about 15 minutes played, Wigan again have a scrum inside Orrells half. This time the Wigan No 8 pick up at the back of the scrum and charges forward, through 2 poor attempts to tackle him, and then passes the ball for Wigan to score their 3rd try, which they convert to extend their lead to 19 – 10.
About 5 minutes later, Orrell knock on to give Wigan a scrum. Then Orrell give away a penalty at the scrum. Wigan kick down field to get a through in at a line-out 5 metres out from the try line. They win the line-out and drive forward and them move the ball out to score their 4th try for a bonus point. They convert the try to extend their lead to 26 – 10.
Orrell however start to attack in the Wigan half, and Wigan start to give away penalties. 10 minutes from Full Time, from a scrum deep in the Wigan half Orrell try to pick up and drive but are forced in touch. However the win the resulting line out and move the ball out to their backs and a good pass from James Glover, gave Matt Johnson the chance to touch down in the corner for Orrell second try. The conversion was missed making the score Wigan 26 Orrell 15.
In the dying minutes of the game Wigan again put pressure on the Orrell defence, and Orrell concede another penalty, which Wigan convert to make the final score Wigan 29 Orrell 15.
Next Saturday 28th April Orrell are again Away, this time to are other local rivals Aspull. Kick Off 3pm.
