Orrell RUFC vs Congleton RFC

First match of the new season gets off to a great start for Orrell RUFC

The first fixture of the new season for Orrell 1st XV team was a visit from Congleton 1st XV, who had beaten Orrell home and away during the 2017-18 season.

Orrell started brightly winning the ball immediately from their own kick off, and retained the ball for five minutes before Congleton conceded a penalty 30 yards from their line. Craig Thomas stepped up and slotted the kick with ease.

From the re-start Orrell drove the ball across the pitch from right of their own half to deep into the opposition territory. The forward pressure told and provided a solid platform for Kieran Herbert to score from inside centre for the first try of the game. This was converted by Thomas to take the score to 10-0.

Orrell completely dominated the first half and ran the Congleton pack ragged. They got further reward four minutes from half time by a fine team effort, passing the ball through several pairs of hands for Chris Owen to score, and another conversion was added from Craig Thomas. The only reply from Congleton was a fine penalty from long distance by their fly half.

Orrell started the second half in similar fashion to the first, with some barn storming runs deep into the Congleton half. Max Huxley burst over on 54 minutes to score and increase the scoreline to 22-3.

Orrell then took their foot off the gas, and allowed Congleton into the game. Poor passing, and a series of silly penalties resulted in Congleton scoring in the far corner on 62 minutes. The conversion improved the scoreline to 22-10.

Congleton continued to press and capitalise on fundamental mistakes by the home side. They scored again with six minutes left to play but missed the ensuing penalty. Orrell held on for the remaing nail biting minutes to win 22-15.

An interesting debrief followed in the home dressing room, with much of the team having their hair blow dried by Head coach Paul Wingfield.

Due to a fixture change Orrell are home again next weekend to welcome new opponents Birchfield.

Please come along and support the team.
Pete Carletti.
