RIP Mich

Mich Dearman (1948–2024)

It is with deep sadness that Orrell RUFC announces the passing of our great friend and former player, Mich Dearman, who died aged 76.

Mich was a towering figure, both on and off the field. During the 1970s and 80s, he played club rugby at the highest level, representing Orrell and Wakefield with distinction in the second row. He had the rare honour of captaining both clubs, a testament to his leadership, tenacity, and respect within the game. Mich also captained Cheshire in the County Championship, further cementing his reputation as a formidable player and inspirational figure.

Following his playing career, Mich shared his deep understanding of the game through coaching, guiding sides such as the England Students and the North of England, helping to shape and develop the next generation of rugby talent.

Beyond rugby, Mich’s legacy is equally profound. He dedicated himself to The Wooden Spoon, the children’s rugby charity, becoming Honorary Vice President (Yorkshire) and tirelessly fundraising to support disadvantaged and disabled children. In 2023, his exceptional efforts were formally recognised when King Charles awarded him the MBE in the first Birthday Honours list of his reign—a truly deserved accolade for a lifetime of giving back.

His friend and Orrell Club President, Bill Lyon, shared this tribute:

“Great clubman, in the 1972 team that won the first Lancs Cup, joined us from Alsager College and became an automatic choice. He never lost his attachment to Orrell and remained a match sponsor to the present day. Despite serious illness over a number of years he still managed to get over from Yorkshire to see first team games. He was a very special person, and he will be sorely missed. RIP my friend.”

Mich is survived by his beloved wife Lisa and son Phil, to whom we extend our heartfelt condolences.

He will be remembered not only as a great player and coach, but as a kind, generous man whose contributions—both on and off the field—made a lasting impact. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Rest in peace, Mich.
