This weekend our first XV are at home to Eccles RUFC Match Day Reporter Dave Parkinson highlights just how important this match is for Orrell RUFC

Eccles were formed in 1897 and played at a number of grounds around the area before moving to their present home at Gorton Street in 1948. The ground was opened in October that year meaning that last October, the club celebrated 70 years of being at their base.

They marked the occasion with the entire club forming a "70" on the main pitch, and a morning where lots of photographs were taken.

As one of the older teams in the North West, it is always an honour to play host to Eccles and they have enjoyed a similarly consistent season to us.

So far this year they have played five games, starting 12th January against a stubborn New Brighton (they won 29-15), next up was a trip to runaway leaders Aspull and they fought all the way before succumbing to a 31-20 defeat. They then beat Congleton in a low scoring home game (17-3) before winning by thirty points at Birchfield (47-17). Last week when we were running 18 tries past Port Sunlight; Dukinfield were also being given the runaround at Gorton Street.

That last game was a 64-12 success over Dukinfield, meaning they travel with three wins on the bounce.

Eccles have already been our opponents twice this season and have collected wins on both occasions. The first encounter was a home cup match which finished 19-38 in their favour while we made the shore trip in November and fell to a 15-31 defeat.

The current league table sees both teams level on points with Orrell enjoying a better point difference, but make no bones about it, we will need all the support we can muster this weekend.
