Ellis Povey brings home the gold for England Touch Rugby!

So last year England got to the Semi finals of the Football World Cup, we are all hoping for success in the Rugby World Cup in Japan but before that it was the European Touch Junior Championships in France. The difference between the 3? Orrell didn't have representation in the football or in Japan but we did in France!! Ellis Povey!

After months of training up and down the country, well mainly down the country as part of the England training squad, the club had 2 players up for selection Ellis and India Halsall.

India was named as a non-travelling reserve and although the plaudits shall be with Ellis the club are no less proud of her achievements and know that next time round she shall be on the pitch.

On Thursday it was time to receive his first (of many) England Caps!

Friday and Saturday Ellis played a key role in 7 games scoring 5 tries, 1 in his 1st game! The opponents on the weekend came from Scotland, France, Ireland, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Middle east and Sundays opponents in the Final - Wales.

Then for his 8th game it was the Final to be crowned European Champions vs Wales. The game was shown live via Youtube with plenty of support back home and what a game it was!

A close match throughout with Ellis scoring to bring the game level and again to take England two tries clear - it was a superb performance and a deserved result for the whole side England 6 Wales 3

After the final whistle, Ellis was also awarded the Players Player award for his performances which is always a high accolade that your peers recognise your contribution.

Ellis will no doubt be playing in his Medal come Friday night Touch at Orrell RUFC before he sets off with 6 of our Juniors to Nationals to represent the North-West. The games just don't stop at this time of the year!

Orrell RUFC Touch Squad can be found every Friday night down at St John Rigby College from 6.00pm. New players - young and old - are always welcome! Come and give it a try!
