It is with great sadness that we announce the death of John Lydon after a period of illness. John was a member of a talented year group attending St,John Rigby Grammar School in the 1960’s. This team went on an unbeaten run for five years and a number of this group went on to play for Orrell Colts and subsequently the 1st XV.

John as leader of this team was the first St John Rigby pupil to represent England Schools. He was promoted to Orrell 1st XV after only a handful of games in the Colts side and was able at a later date to represent Lancashire in the County Championship. He left Orrell for a very brief spell with Waterloo and in the mid 70’s played for Wigan RUFC until a string of injuries forced a premature retirement.

For many of our veteran former players John will be remembered as a talented Fly-Half and Fullback with a devastating tackle. He was a very popular team member, a great character and wonderful company. He will be sorely missed and our thoughts and condolences go out to his immediate family.
