A lovely reminder that we are still collecting any memorabilia or club history that you may like to share with us!

Remember this story from June 2019? We are still collecting any club memorabilia or history that you may like to share with us. Please contact our Club Secretary and Archivist John Huyton if you do have anything we can share with our members and players.

Geoff Earnshaw contacted the club recently to return some picture memories of his families time supporting their son and Orrell RUFC in the Edge Hall Road Days. Geoff’s son Lawrence played for Orrell RUFC staring in the Junior, Colts and Senior Teams at scrum half. Geoff & Sue recall Orrell reaching the quarter-finals and semi-finals of the different cup competitions on several occasions and produced England players, such as John Carleton, the wing who played in the 1980 grand slam-winning team and toured with the Lions, more recently Nigel Heslop, on the wing, and Dewi Morris, the scrum half. Orrell’s peak came in 1991-92, when they led the Courage Clubs Championship with three matches to go before a last-minute dropped goal by Huw Davies for Wasps inflicted on Orrell the defeat that ultimately lost them the title to Bath. So near yet so far Geoff recalls!

The pictures will be archived and kept safe till the new facilities are built adjacent to Winstanley College. Geoff and Sue are looking to return to Orrell soon and watch a home game and will be made very welcome. Home for the Earnshaw’s now is Gloucester and we wish both the very best in their retirement. Geoff plays walking rugby in his spare time in Gloucester.

The pictures are from top Easter U19s International Tournament 1991, middle Lawrence Earnshaw in action for Orrell & bottom Colts Squad 1991/ 1992.

Thanks again Geoff & Sue for sharing your Orrell memories.
