Robinson’s Brewery Cup Final: Orrell win Cup Final after a gritty performance against Anselmians

Robinson’s Brewery Cup Final: Old Bedians RUFC
Orrell 2 vs Anselmians 2
15 - 11

It’s Cup Final at Old Bedians, Didsbury in Manchester. With Eccles and De la Salle semi-final being cancelled, the Halbro Northwest League invited Anselmians to face Orrell 2 in the Robinson Brewery Bowl Final.

A beautiful morning and a pre-match breakfast meet at Holland Hall preparations for the cup final could not have been better. Coach to Didsbury, Orrell 2 needed to be on top form. Perfect conditions at Old Bedians and a big crowd for finals day.

Orrell started slowly and were on the back foot from the start, good forward play enabled Anselmians to take the ball to Orrell and after a series of infringements led to Anselmians to take an early lead on 6’ minutes.

From the restart Orrell took advantage of some sloppy play and a penalty awarded to Orrell. James Ratcliffe kick fell short of the posts and Anselmians cleared the ball. With 17’ minutes on the clock, quick hands through the backs allowed Ollie Wakefield to score in the corner. Conversion missed score Orrell 5 Anselmians 3.

This incursion into Orrell’s half spurred Anselmians on and on 27’ minutes regained the lead with another penalty 5 – 6. Orrell finished the 1st half strong and were rewarded a penalty in front of the Anselmians. Kick missed and half time score Orrell 5 Anselmians 6.

2nd half was pretty much the same as the both sides exchanged penalties and scored one try each. Orrell drew 1st blood with a penalty on 49ers minutes. The Orrell coaches decided to make forward changes with Rob Lee and James Pearson joining the game.

Orrell’s 2nd try came from James Ratcliffe, taking the ball inside his own half two side steps and he was away under the posts. Conversion kicked the score moved onto 15 – 6. 70’ minutes gone and Anselmians scored in the corner, conversion missed score 15 – 11. The last twenty minutes was the best defensive display of the season repelling everything the opposition had in its armoury. Last play and Orrell retained position from a scrum and kicked the ball into touch.

Final Score Orrell 2xv 15 – 11 Anselmians

A gritty team performance and excellent performances from Mike Caldwell & David Wane and for the backs some excellent running from Ollie Lynn, Louis Whitfield and James Ratcliffe.

Full match highlights will be available to players and fans early next week.

My MoM was Matthew Stott.
