The Club is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Walter Thorley

The former caretaker of Edge Hall Road, Club Member and keeper of the players "Lost and Found" Box, sadly passed away at the weekend.

Walter Thorley

Living in Edge Hall road 2 doors down from the main entrance to the rugby ground, Walter was the local milkman delivering milk in and around Orrell village in the 1950/60’s. His dairy and milk storage was the building just inside the gates of Orrell Rugby Club’s ground.

Being so close it was ideal for him and his wife-Vera to become involved with Orrell RUFC and they became the caretakers of the Club. Vera also got involved with the Ladies Committee and was a help in the kitchen preparing and serving food after the games.

“Walt” was always available – especially on match days when the lads were getting ready for the game and had forgotten something – he would rummage in his lost and found box and come up with the goods from his stock.

He would help in marking out the pitches, before we had groundsmen and in many other ways until we moved into the professional era when he “graduated” into being a more relaxed member, but if asked to do anything or help in any way, he would be there.

Both Walter and Vera got involved in many ways with Orrell RUFC and it is a sad loss to the Orrell RUFC family and community.

RIP Walter
