Orrell welcomed local rivals Wigan to St John Rigby College hoping to overturn the result of their earlier encounter in the league, when they lost to Wigan 22 – 20 in November of last year.
In the opening half hour, the game was evenly matched with most of the play in the middle of the field. Both teams created opportunities but did not find the final pass. including in the opening few minutes of the game when Orrell were awarded a penalty and from the resulting line out they moved the ball across the field and created an overlap, but the final pass was knocked on when it appeared that Orrell would be the first to score in the game.
A few minutes later Orrell again had the opportunity to open the scoring with a penalty kick, but the ball went wide.
Midway through the half, from a penalty Wigan had a throw in at a line out close to the Orrell try line and Orrell had to desperately defend several pick up and drives by Wigan before they could clear their line.
With just 10 minutes left before the break and still no score in the game, despite several breaks through the middle of the pitch by both sides, Orrell were again defending inside their own 22 when Wigan was awarded a scrum 10 meters out from the line. Wigan's No.8 Wayne Bullough picked the ball up at the back of the scrum and raced over the line to touch down for the opening point in the game. Fly Half Chris Carr converted the try to give the visitors a 7 points lead.
In the last few minutes of the half Orrell were attacking close to the Wigan line and the visitors were defending a series of pick up and drive after giving away a penalty. Wigan again gave away a penalty and Orrell's captain Dan Huxley quickly tapped the ball and drove over the line to score Orrell's first points of the game. The try was converted by Chris Owen to level the score at 7 points each at half time.
Early on in the second half Orrell had to defend in their own 22, but neither side could add to their score until just into the last 10 minutes of the game when Wigan gave away a penalty just 10 meters inside their own half. The penalty was kick by Chris Owen was successful to give Orrell the lead for the first time in the game. Orrell 10 Wigan 7.
There then was a series of injuries to players to both side that cause a number of stoppages and disrupted play, but eventually with about 5 minutes left in the game, Wigan won a line out, from a penalty kick, inside Orrell's 22 and mauled the ball and then moved it out to their backs for centre Oliver Turvey to wrong foot 2 defenders to touch down behind the posts for the visitors second try, which he converted to give Wigan back the lead with time running out in the game. Orrell 19 – Wigan 14.
However, soon after the restart Orrell got possession of the ball and break down the left winger was eventually stopped by Wigan, who then had to defend a number of pick up and drive close to their line, which resulted in Orrell Prop Josh Grant being held up over the line.
The drop out restart from between the post took the ball back to the half way line. Orrell collected the ball which was passed to Chris Owen who made a break along the left touch line, and when he got close to the 22 meter line, with 2 Orrell players inside him with a clear field in front of them and the defence closing down on him, he kicked the ball inside and it bounced up in front of Orrell replacement Harvey Howard who collected the ball cleanly and touch down for Orrell's second try, which was converted by Chris to give Orrell back the lead Orrell 17 – Wigan 14.
There was still time left in the game to restart, but eventually Orrell got possession of the ball and passed it to Chris to kick it into touch to end the game with the score Orrell 17 – Wigan 14.
