7. New Year’s resolutions come and go but being part of Doddie Weir’s fundraising legacy can have a profound and lasting effect on their search for an MND cure.

Doddie fought for years to raise funds for an MND cure! Can you pledge just 6 weeks of exercise you will wanted to do as part of your new year’s resolution?

By now you will all be aware of Orrell RUFC’s support for the DoddieCup555 (providing another layby off the M6? for a pit stop for all the riders as well as entering a team of riders to take part in this great fundraising event) …..but how can you, the Orrell RUFC rugby family help?

You could of course just donate via our Just Giving Pages, you could volunteer on the day by helping in the pit stop, you could help our cycling team by being a backup driver or part of the support team, or you could take part in a mass participation exercise event. It could even be your New Year’s Resolution … one that lasts a little longer than just giving up chocolate maybe?

The Doddie Cup 555 is the grand finale of the bigger 2023 Doddie Aid event. This is a mass participation exercise event, where The Doddie Weir Foundation are looking to get as many people as possible to sign up (for just £20) to 6 weeks of exercise and recording of their miles for their team.

There are 6 regions to choose from, Wales, the Baabaas (everyone else/ROTW), Edinburgh, Glasgow, The South and then the North and Midlands of Scotland.
In its 3rd year, the events have raised £2million up till now and had 30,000 people take part. With the tragic loss of the Foundation’s figurehead last year, it is even more poignant, and we want to help make it bigger than ever. If Doddie Aid can get 50,000 taking part, that is another £2 million for MND research as the hunt for solutions to this awful disease continues.

You just need to download the Doddie Aid App - sign up is amazingly simple and fast. You will be sent a team snood out as a thank you too. Then you can form leagues and invite the club community to join you. You can join multiple leagues, so can do one for family, for friends, for school friends, work mates, etc.... Can we get enough people together for an Orrell RUFC Family League?

Through the 6 weeks of the event, every weekend there will be a theme. The last weekend is obviously cycling, with those not doing the 555 able to ride some miles in solidarity with us. The first weekend is a cold water dook, as it’s called in Scotland, so be warned.

Please spread the word amongst our Orrell RUFC family and friends; the key route for recruitment is spreading the word at grassroots level! Our rugby family can be so good at responding to that. With your help, this is going to be a massive success and we, Orrell RUFC, can help make it successful. Please think about getting involved. It will be a lot of fun. Because Doddie would always want that.
